Dr Sarath Guttikunda founded UrbanEmissions.info in 2007 to establish it as a repository for information and analysis related to air pollution. Sarath has many years of experience conducting research related to air pollution. His interest in the subject began as he was completing his doctorate from the Center for Global & Regional Environmental Research (CGRER) at the University of Iowa. He then worked as an air pollution analyst in Washington, DC (USA) for five years before moving back to India. He is currently based in New Delhi and consults and does research in an independent capacity with various institutions and research organizations. He is an affiliate associate research professor at the Desert Research Institute (DRI), Reno, USA.

In 2009 Sarath attended the TEDIndia conference as a TED fellow.
